1st All Candidates Meeting

I participated in my first All Candidates meeting this week. Here's what I learned:


  • 165 well-informed constituents showed up even though the weather was questionable (remember the tornado warnings).

  • 38 people asked questions of individual candidates ranging from "how will we dispose of wind turbine blades when their life-cycle expires (landfill?)" to "how can we assist the Amish community to vote given they don't have computers or phones for online/phone voting"?


Recurring themes were:


  • Residents feel unheard and not included in decisions.

  • Residents want access to, and communication with council.

  • There is a need to be one, united ACW township community (not one area vs another).

  • Lakeshore residents are facing challenges with access from private roads being in poor repair or unplowed resulting in the inability of Emergency Response Services (ERS) to attend (people having to drive the person in need of service to meet the ERS at the end of the road at hwy.#21)

  • ACW needs to do more to keep hwy.#21 open during winter storms/road closures (so residents can legally return to their homes and ERS can get through).

  • Environmental/Land Stewardship is a priority -- especially water quality and shoreline erosion.

  • Access to public beaches is being blocked by private property owners.

  • How will we manage infrastructure life-cycles (aging roads and bridges).


I left the meeting impressed with the wealth of knowledge and information in our community; and I will champion ways to create opportunities to regularly engage residents and council in in-person settings.
